Though retired from active business, his interest in all pertaining to the institutions with which he was so long associated, continued to the end. Mr. Harter was born in Herkimer county, New York, April 18, 1813. In 1839 he came to Ionia, locating on 160 acres of land four miles from this city. Two years later he was married to Miss Sarah Yates, who, with two daughters, Mrs. L. B. Avery of this city and Mrs. U. B. Rogers of Grand Rapids, survive him.
