Pat spent 35-plus years as plant layout engineer for Mitchell-Bentley/A.O. Smith/General Tire & Rubber in Ionia before retiring in 1986. He and his wife, Jane, love to spend winters in Sunny Grove Park in Estero, Fla. He faithfully published the park newspaper, “The Pelican Tale,” for many years. A favorite annual event he delighted in was having all his children and grandchildren visit Sunny Grove at Christmas time, a tradition that continued even through this past Christmas. He and Jane were enthusiastic cheerleaders for their granddaughters and anything they pursued. He tirelessly assisted Jane in her later years as she battled COPD and he was an ardent supporter of Hartley Courseware, a software company started by Jane and son, Tim. Pat was an amazing builder of everything including community theater stage sets, a family cottage on Muskellunge Lake, Jane’s beautiful kitchen and garage addition on their Ionia residence, and even large-scale Barbie doll houses for his granddaughters. Pat proudly served his country as a radioman in the Air Force during World War II, stationed in Guam. He married his devoted wife, Jane Taylor, in 1951 and they would have celebrated their 50th anniversary had Jane not passed away in May, 2001. Patrick was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh L. and Edith Laginess, wife Jane, granddaughter Hilary Ayan, one brother Lt. Commander Donald Hartley, two sisters Betty Worthington, Colleen McKitrick, and special friend Evelyn Atkinson from Winnipeg.
