She and her husband had recently moved to Cascade from their home of 50 years in Ionia. She was a lifelong educator dedicated to helping both children and adults learn to read and was one of the first in the country to use computers in the classroom. She taught in public and private schools in Ionia for 29 years before retiring to work full-time with Hartley Courseware, an educational software company founded by Jane and her son in 1979. She was the author of hundreds of computer-based adult literacy, elementary and special education lessons which are still being used today and was a frequent lecturer at state and national computer education workshops. Though the company was later sold, she continued developing lessons until a few months before she died. Jane was a mentor and friend to everyone she encountered throughout her life. She received her Masters degree in elementary education from Michigan State University, became a lifelong member of the Michigan Education Association, the National Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and was active for many years in the Ionia Community Theatre. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ted; and grand-daughter, Hilary. She is survived by her devoted husband of 50 years, Patrick; her children, Tim (Darcy) Hartley of Cascade and Elayne (John) Ayan of Dedham, Mass.; and loving granddaughters, Nicki, Allie and Joy. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday at Cascade Christian Church. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at Metcalf and Jonkhoff Funeral Service, 4291 Cascade Rd. SE, East of I-96 in Grand Rapids. Memorial contributions may be made to Cascade Christian Church or the American Lung Association.
