Divorce Recently Started Against Him By Spouse Wife, Children and Neighbor Leave House by Rear; Officer Finds Hartman Dead on Porch. Roy Hartman, 35 years of age, drank carbolic acid and died on the porch of his home at Belding late last night after his wife had refused to let him in. He was found dead by an officer who had been summoned by Mrs. Hartman after she, with her children and a neighbor woman, had left the house by a rear door. Hartman, against whom his wife had recently started divorce proceedings, went from Ionia by the late bus last night and, arriving in Belding, went at once to the home on Hambrook street. There he demanded to be let in and was refused. He tried to break in, and told his wife that if she did not let him in he would kill himself. Those in the house left quietly and when Office Cook reached the house later Hartman was dead on the porch, his mouth and throat terribly burned by the acid he had poured down. Last week suit was filed in circuit court for divorce by Mrs. Hartman. In the bill, it was charged that Hartman was cruel to his wife, calling her vile names, and swearing in the presence of their three children, who are 11, nine, and three years of age. She also charged that on several occasions he had threatened to kill her. They were married January 16, 1910, at Crystal. They lived together until February 14 of this year. She has had to work in the silk mills at Belding and has had to take in washings because her husband failed to support her and the children, she charged in the bill. Hartman had been enjoined by the court from going home.
