Hartwig had passed away early that morning, following a two month’s illness. Funeral services were held from the residence this afternoon, in charge of Rev. J. H. Stewart, and under the auspices of the Portland lodge of Masons of which he was a member. Burial was made in Portland cemetery. Mr. Hartwig was born on a farm near Williamston, in February 1876. While residing at that place he was united in marriage to Miss Julia Klunzinger. Seventeen years ago the family moved to Portland, Mr. Hartwig entering the meat business which vocation he followed until the time of his illness. Two years ago he became associated in that business with W. W. Peake, the firm being known as Hartwig & Peake. Several years ago he was elected on the democrat ticket as township clerk, filling that position in a most creditable manner. Although he was a very quiet and unassuming man he made friends of all with whom he came into contact, being familiarly known as “Al” by both old and young and he will be sadly missed by those who were honored by his friendship. Besides the widow he is survived by three children, Cleo, Newton and Deward, all at home. Two brothers and two sisters also survive. They are William, of California; Lewis, of Webberville, Mich.; Mrs. Edward Gould, of Fowlerville, and Mrs. George Bedford, of Lansing.
