Hartwig, 91, of Portland, passed away April 9, 2006. She was born October 19, 1914 the daughter of John and Ella (Fitzpatrick) Lawless, Sr. on their farm on Peck Lake Road. She graduated from Portland High School in 1932 and later attended County Normal, a teachers preparatory school. Vera later taught at Pierce and Gibbs Schools and she met her husband, Newt Hartwig and moved to the west side of Portland and had three children, Larry Tom and Kay. Mrs. Hartwig was offered a job at St. Patrick’s School in their Early Elementary Department and taught their for five years and later moved on to the Benedict School near Ionia. She finished her education and graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelors of Science degree. She was offered employment at Portland Public Schools teaching the first and second grades, which she loved. Vera was a resident of Portland her entire life, a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and will be long remembered by her friends and family as a woman of courage, peace, and having a warm heart. She was preceded in death by her husband, Newton in 1962, and her son, Fr. Lawrence Hartwig in 1998. Surviving are her children, Dr. Thomas and Mrs. Peggy Hartwig and Kathryn (Kay) Hartwig of Grand Rapids; grandchildren Meghan Hartwig of Baton Rough, La., Nicole Cimoch of Grand Rapids, Sean Hartwig of Ann Arbor, Kristen Armock and Greg Armock of Sparta. She loved her great grandchildren, calling them her “lovely dancers” Bailey, Delaney, and Kinsey Armock. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 12 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland with Rev. Larry King, presiding. Rite of Committal followed at Portland Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.
