Hartzler, 90, of Remington, Va., formerly of Lansing and Clarksville, died Wednesday at the Fauquier Hospital, Warrenton, Va. He was born November 20, 1901, in Fairview, the eldest son of Mennonite farmers, Abraham and Lydia Hartzler. He married Naomi Schrock in 1928. They were both active in the Church of the Brethren, holding many leadership roles. He was Michigan state director of Christian Overseas Program (CROP) for 21 years, retiring in 1969. Earlier work included service with Heifer Project, Brethren Service, the building Camp Brethren Heights, Rodney, and later in Michigan Interfaith Disaster Response (MIDR). He and his wife hosted foreign students and helped in resettling displaced persons from many countries. His wife preceded him in death on Nov. 7, 1982. In 1983, he married Lessie Beckwith, who preceded him in death in 1987. He is survived by two daughters, Ellyn Hartzler of Remington and Babs Wheeler of Chaska, Minn.; two sons Daryl of Lake Odessa and Karyl of Lake; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five stepchildren; 12 step grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild; and one sister Eldora Hartzler of Fairview. Private funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, April 11, at the Koops Funeral Chapel, Lake Odessa. The family will be at the funeral chapel on Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Lake Odessa. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Lansing Church of Brethren. Memorials have been established for the Lansing Church of Brethren, the Camp Brethren Heights renovation fund, in care of the funeral home.
