Mr. Harwood was born in Ionia, Michigan to Kenneth and Helen (Nichols) Harwood. He was raised in Ionia and graduated from Ionia High School in 1953. He then went on an attended Michigan State University where he earned a degree in Agriculture Engineering. Mr. Harwood also earned both a graduate and masters degree (Purdue) in Agriculture Engineering. Mr. Harwood served his country with five years of active service in the United States Air Force. His area of expertise was as navigator for KC97 (Airplane's used for refueling). He served five months in the Vietnam War. He had also been an ROTC and retired as a reservist. Mr. Harwood's two main occupations were working research and development for the USDA for 12 years and R &O again for private companies for another four years. He also spent 16 years working for the Michigan Department of Transportation retiring completely in 1995. On October 15, 1960 he married Kaye A. Green in Brooklyn, Michigan. She survives. The couple had resided in Marshall since 1976. In his free time Mr. Harwood enjoyed his time as a member of Habitat for Humanity, MACS, and also the Marshall United Methodist Church. His many hobbies included, hunting, fishing, gardening, building homes, traveling (favorite locations include: Scotland, Bolivia, Trinidad and Japan), being active with Marshall's sister city (Koka-Cho), traveling around the country to see his family members, and spending time with friends and family. Fred has seen and done just about everything. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Pamela (Michael) Jonascu of Sierra Madre, Cal., Beth Schultz of Rochester, Minn., Wendy Goddard of Ann Arbor, five grandchildren, one sister, Avis Wahl of Belding, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marcia Porter. Visitation for Mr. Harwood will take place on Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home. The family will be present to receive visitors from 2 to 5 p.m. Cremation will follow. A memorial service celebrating his life will take place on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Marshall United Methodist Church. Interment of cremains will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
