Haskins, 76, Succumbs as He Sits on Porch After Walk to Town Survived by Six Sons, One Daughter. After partaking of a hearty breakfast, going to town, and apparently in the best of health, Freeman C. Haskins, 76, of Saranac, sat down on the porch of his home last Friday morning near noon and within a few minutes died. His death breaks a period of 55 years of married life. Mrs. Haskins survives. Mr. Haskins was a Civil war veteran and a resident of Saranac nearly all his life. He had been active in the civic work of the village. He was well liked and respected by a large group of friends. Five years ago, the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, it being a great day in the lives of the venerable folk. Mr. Haskins was born in Sandusky, Ohio, September, 1846. When a small child, his parents came to Michigan, settling on a farm near Woodland, Ionia county. He lived there until 1882, when he moved to Saranac. He served three years in the Civil war. At the age of 21 he married Polly Libscome of Woodland. Mr. Haskins’ health has been poorly for two years, but this summer he had been feeling better and Thursday had been down town. Besides Mrs. Haskins, he leaves one daughter, Myrtle Boardman, of Ionia, and six sons, James, Burt, Elick and John of Merryweather, Michigan, and Henry and Leon of Saranac. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the M. E. church. Rev. W. H. Halladay delivered the sermon. Prayer was offered by Rev. C. O. Hayward. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Adgate of Ionia rendered the music. The six sons acted as pall-bearers. Burial was made in the Saranac cemetery. Friends were here from Detroit, Battle Creek, Grand Rapids, Lake Odessa, Ionia, Walloon Lake, Merryweather and Ironwood. The floral offerings were many and beautiful.
