Haskins where she has been tenderly cared for during the past several months. She had been a remarkable old lady, always cheerful and keeping alert and trying to do her best to the very last day of her life. Mrs. Haskins loved home, family and close friends of which she had a great many. Her courage to face whatever lot came to her was ever evident, but last fall when her youngest son, Leon, was called by death after a brief illness she was deeply grieved and never seemed to be able to overcome that grief entirely. She failed noticeably from that time, nearly a year ago. Born September 4, 1848 in Thamesville, Canada to Allen and Sarah Lipscomb, Polly was Canadian by birth but came to the United States with her parents when very young and these sturdy pioneers settled in Woodland, Barry county, Michigan. She was married to Freeman T. Haskins in 1865, shortly after his discharge from service in the Civil war and she became a member of the W. R. C. and was the last member of this order in this community. They came to Saranac more than 60 years ago and Mrs. Haskins spent most of her long life here. Ten children were born to this union, seven of whom survive her, one daughter, Mrs. Myrtie Boardman of Ionia; six sons, James, Burt, Alec, and John of Merriweather, U. P.; Henry of Saranac and Grover of Grand Rapids. She is also survived by 30 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren besides a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Saranac mourns the passing of this grand old pioneer who endeared herself to everyone who knew her. Prayer service was held Monday afternoon at two o’clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Cahoon, grandchildren and funeral services were from the Methodist church at 2:30 with Rev. Frank Loomis officiating. Burial was in the family lot in Saranac cemetery beside her husband who preceded her 16 years ago. Pall bearers were five sons, Henry, Burt, Alec, James and Grover and Ward, Clare and Freeman Haskins, grandsons. John was ill and unable to attend the funeral.
