Haskins, 91, died on July 26, 2001. Harol was born on Dec. 8, 1909, in a farmhouse in Saranac, the son of Alpha and Mary (Baird) Haskins. He entered our world as quietly as he departed it. But his life journey touched many hearts in Ionia County. This lifetime educator graduated from Saranac High school in 1927. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Michigan University in 1939 and late in his professional career completed his Masters degree at his alma mater in 1961. He applied his even-handed teaching style at several local schools – Lyons, Hesperia and ultimately returned to his own Saranac High School to serve as principal 1950 to 1958. The gentleman farmer, and full-time educator later served at Saranac as a counselor (1959 to 1975), where he shaped, molded and advised the impressionable youth of Ionia County. Harol was a member of the Saranac Community Church, as well as the Valley Presbyterian Church in Green Valley, Ariz. Mr. Haskins was a member of the Masons, a charter member of the Saranac Lions Club, and most recently the Sabbar Temple of Tucson, Green Valley Shrine Club, Hi-twelve and Men’s 260 Club. Harol’s legacy lives on in the lives he has influenced in the Ionia Community. His teachings and advice have been direction-finders for the adolescents who have grown and are now businessmen, farmers, educators and community leaders. With a twinkle in his eye, a reassuring voice and a calming demeanor he was a father, grandfather, great-grandfather and counselor. He was a benchmark that many will be judged by, but few will meet the height of the bar he has set. Harol Haskins is survived by his wife, Faye (Carter) Haskins of Green Valley, Ariz.; his two sons, Lionel and Chuck of Saranac; his daughter Rosemary (Haskins) Healy of Stevenson Ranch, Calif.; stepson, David Strand and stepdaughter, Antonia (Strand) Adams both of Marietta, Ga.; as well as 19 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Haskins will be at 11 a.m., Monday at Saranac Community Church with Rev. John Madvig officiating. Visitation will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Sunday at the Lake Funeral Home in Saranac. Anyone wishing may make a memorial contribution to Saranac Community Schools. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
