Sentinel-Standard - Monday, Aug. 12, 1935

Mrs. Bertha Hass, 79, widow of Ludwig Hass, died Monday morning at her home, 
459 Jones street, following a long illness. She had been in poor health for the 
past three years following a stroke and was taken critically ill about two 
weeks ago. 

She was born in Germany, July 29, 1856, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John 
Passow, and she resided in Germany until 24 years of age. She was married in 
Germany to Ludwig Hass, October 1878 and two years later they came to America 
and settled in Ionia. The year after they came to Ionia they built their home 
at 459 Jones street, and she had lived in the same home for 24 years. Mr. Hass 
was employed at the Pere Marquette car shops. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hass were 
charter members of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church which was built the 
year they came to Ionia and Mrs. Hass well remembered the dedication services 
which were held for the church the following spring. Mrs. Hass was also a 
member of the St. John's Lutheran ladies aid society and until the past few 
years, had been an active worker for the interests of the church. Mr. Hass died 
in 1902 and for several years Mrs. Hass had made her home with her daughter, 
Mrs. Otto Rubach, at the same residence on Jones street. 

Surviving are five children, Mrs. Richard Hass, William Hass, Mrs. William 
Seeliger, and Mrs. Otto Rubach, all of Ionia; and Mrs. George Kurth of Alma, 
Wisconsin, and eight grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements have not been made.
