Hatch our village loses one of its oldest business men and one who as a member of the well-known hardware firm of Hatch & Baker has been intimately connected with every effort tending towards the betterment of the community. Deceased was born in Burlington, Vt., April 13, 1831, and died at Lyons Thursday, August 11, 1910 after an illness of six months. At an early age he learned the tinner’s trade and followed it for over sixty years, doing shop work up to within nine months of his death. He was married in 1853 to Ruth D. Morgan, who died in 1888. Four children were born to this union, Chas. S. Hatch of Denver, Colo., Clara J. Searing of Lyons, Millard F. Hatch of Newaygo and Flora B. Fuller of Lyons. Deceased moved to Grand Rapids about 1855, where he was employed by the old firm of Foster & Stevens. In 1857 he came to Lyons and entered the employ of Geo. Isham, who then conducted a hardware store on the site of L.A. Sutton’s photograph gallery, later becoming a partner with him. In 1866 or 1867 Joseph F. Baker bought the interest of Mr. Isham and the partnership of Hatch & Baker was formed, which continued to the date of Mr. Baker’s death in 1906, and the firm name is still retained. About 1872 the present brick building was built. In 1892 deceased was married to Addie Crittenden, who with the four children survive. Mr. Hatch was firm and outspoken in his opinions and believed in giving every man a square deal. Honest was one of his cardinal virtues and in all his business dealings he gave to every man his just due. The funeral was held Sunday from the home in which he lived for nearly half a century and was attended by many of his old-time friends and associates, besides those who knew him in later years. The service was conducted by Rev. W. W. Hurd, with singing by Mesdames Bradt and Hawley, and there were many floral offerings. The pall-bearers were M. F. Hatch, Harry Searing, W. H. Sherwood, L. D. Sherwood, Frank Swain and E. S. Fuller.
