Dr. J.M. Hathaway passed away early this morning, at the home on Lafayette street where he has calmly been awaiting the summons for several weeks. His death had been expected, and all the immediate family were here. Dr. Hathaway was born in Oakland county 72 years ago last March. He was one of eight children, five of whom are still living. They are: Mrs. Wm. Coney of Pontiac, Mrs. Geo. Bird and M.D. Hathaway of Pontiac, J.B. Hathaway of Flint, and Mrs. Ella Coney of this city. He entered the 1st Michigan cavalry in 1867 and served until the close of the war, when he returned to his profession of dentistry. More than forty years ago he moved to Ionia, where he has lived ever since, an active and highly esteemed citizen. The death of Dr. Hathaway will be the source of genuine grief to many, for his friends and friendships were known to be sacred to him. He married Miss Amanda Phillips of this city, and leaves two children besides his widow - Dr. Claude Hathaway of this city and Mrs. Robert L. Taylor of Grand Rapids. He has been engaged in the pursuit of his profession of dentistry all of his life except while he was in the army, and for two years immediately after his father’s death, which occurred more than forty years ago, when he cared for the Oakland county farm for his mother. His father’s death took place four years ago. About two years ago failing health forced him to abandon regular work, and the office here was continued by his son alone, and has been in his hands ever since. The funeral will be held at the Church of Christ at two o’clock Friday afternoon. It will be conducted by Rev. Branch. The bearers will be chosen from the local G.A.R., who will probably hold their service at the grave in Highland Park.
