Our People Very Much Surprised by the Accidental Death of Jake Hauck. Jacob W. Hauck was found dead in his room at the Harrington Hotel in St. Louis, Mich., last Friday afternoon. Mr. Hauck, who has been a resident of this city for the past ten years went to St. Louis, Wednesday previous to his death, for the purpose of disposing of his saloon stock and fixtures here and also to try the mineral baths in hopes that the treatment would be beneficial to his health, which had not been good for several months. He stopped at the Harrington Hotel and on retiring Thursday night told the landlord to call him at eight o’clock as he desired to return to Belding on the early train. The clerk says he called him and supposed he answered, and thought no more about it for several hours. On going to the room again they could get no answer and broke in the door finding him in bed with his head resting on his hand, and a handkerchief to his face which had been saturated with chloroform. A telegram was immediately sent to his brothers here and at Westphalia and Pewamo. An inquest was held, the jury deciding that he came to his death by an over dose of chloroform but not taken with suicidal intent. He had been in the habit, late years, of taking opiates to cause sleep. George and Mike Hauck and M.B. Devine went to St. Louis, Friday, returning with the body Saturday evening. In his pockets were found $324.24. He had completed the sale of his stock and fixtures but told the man he did not care to have the money paid to him until morning. The funeral service was held in the Congregational church Sunday afternoon, Rev. B.V. Child officiating.
