He was born May 22, 1967, in Ionia to Harold Durain and Frances Louise (Chadwick) Hauter, and he married Lorinda Kay Jackson on Dec. 28, 1968, at Saranac Community Church. Craig was a graduate of Saranac High School and Central Michigan University. He then served his country in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne division during the Vietnam War. Craig lived in Ferrysburg for 35 years and worked at Continental Motors for 33 years before retiring in 2010. He served as president of the board of directors at Service 1 Credit Union and was a member of the Saranac American Legion Post # 175. Craig's greatest joy was time spent with family and friends at the family cottage. He loved fishing, was a "scratch" golfer, and enjoyed hound dogs. He had a special place in his heart for his dog, "Spot". Craig was also an avid MSU Spartan fan. He enjoyed listening to Detroit Tigers radio broadcasts with his sons and friends on the deck at his cottage. Craig is lovingly remembered by his wife of 44 years, Lorinda; three sons; James "Jim" (A.J.) Hauter of Wellington, Colo., William "Bill" (Mary) Hauter of Rock ford, and Jeffrey "Jeff" Hauter of Muskegon; two grandchildren, Leah Kay and Lewis Gene Hauter; mother-in-law, Lorraine Jackson of Sparta; two brothers- in-law, Steve (Patti) Jackson of Grand Rapids and Doug (Arlene) Jackson of Sparta; cousins, Bruce (Margaret) Chadwick of Saranac and Anne (Alvin) Smith of Saranac; and numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews. Craig was preceded in death by his parents. Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions to Hospice of North Ottawa Community are appreciated.
