Hawkins, 82, of Ionia, passed away Friday, March 12, at Spectrum- East Campus in East Grand Rapids. Orville Leroy Hawkins was born Jan. 22, 1917 in Emington, Ill, the son of Luther and Mamie (Nelson) Hawkins. Mr. Hawkins worked his own farm most of his life, while also working at various factories, including Gibson’s, Mitchel-Bentley, and A.C. Spark Plug. He built five homes in his neighborhood, including his own, which he moved to after selling his farm. Orville then worked for the Brown. Corp. for 14 years, retiring in 1979. He married Beatrice Haney on Aug. 21, 1940, and she preceded him in death in 1984. Orville liked hunting and taking care of his lawn. Mr. Hawkins is survived by three sons, Robert Hawkins, Dale Hawkins and Jack (Irene) Hawkins, all of Ionia; two daughters, Dianne (Joseph) Dinehart and Mary Lou (Dan) Hopkins; also of Ionia; 12 grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; two sisters, Sylvia Holcomb of Snows Lake and Hazel (Ted) Fernand of Grand Ledge; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Robin Scott Hawkins; and one sister, Irene Young. Upon Mr. Hawkins’ request, no services will be held. Interment will be in Easton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia Area Hospice.
