Y., on the first day of March, 1845, and departed this life on Wednesday, the 24th day of December, 1919, at the age of 74 years, 9 months and 23 days. In 1855 the family moved to Jackson, Michigan, and in the year 1861 came to Ionia county, settling on a farm two and one half miles west of Palo where Charles spent several of his younger years developing into a hardy and industrious young man. On the 4th day of July, 1872, he was united in marriage to Mahala Minier who survives him. This young couple lived upon rented farms until the winter of 1872 when they purchased the farm one mile south of Vickeryville, which at that time was only partly cleared, and by hard work and perseverance they have developed it into one of the finest homes in the community as it is seen at this time. Mr. Hawley formerly possessed a strong constitution but as time wore on it gave way to the infirmities of age and during the past few years has been a patient sufferer but kept faithfully at his work as failing strength would permit until taken with a severe cold which developed into pneumonia causing a few days of intense suffering and he passed from this life leaving the faithful wife and helpmate; also Mabel, now Mrs. F. C. Newcomb, and family, three sisters. Mrs. Charlotte Brown and Mrs. Susan Comstock of Palo and Miss Marion Hawley of Washington, two brothers, Asa H. of Palo and Byron of Ionia, besides many other relatives and friends who mourn their loss and the community loses a staunch friend, one whom it will be remembered as being upright and worthy and was ever ready to lend a helping hand for all that which was good and well meaning.
