Hawley. In Hospital at Midnight from Operation Monday Afternoon Ionians were shocked this morning by the intelligence that Mrs. R.A. Hawley died at midnight at the hospital in Ann Arbor after the preformance of an operation at half-past four in the afternoon. She had been in the hospital since Monday of last week, and had shown sufficient signs of improvement to encourage the physicians to hope for her recovery from the surgery - hopes which were quickly shattered, as she scarcely rallied at all, only faintly recognizing some of those about her. Mrs. Hawley was Ruth Lockwood before her marriage. She was born in Rollin, Lenawee county, September 2, 1871, and was educated there. Her high school education she received in Hudson, and was married afterward to Wm. Pittman, who died after only a few years of married life. Mrs. Pittman then taught school. She studied at the State Normal in Ypsilanti, and graduated there. She then taught in Wayne and came here to take charge of the Ionia Normal in 1907, teaching here three years. In 1910 she went to the Detroit University School, where she remained for two years, leaving in June 1912, to teach in summer school at Ypsilanti. In August, 1912, she was married to R.A. Hawley of this city and has lived here ever since. Her illness dates from Sept. 20 of this fall, though headaches and other symptoms preceded it for about a year. In September her illness was so severe that her life was despaired of, but she recovered sufficiently to be removed to Ann Arbor, where it was hoped that an operation to remove the tumor on her brain might meet with success, but the attempt failed. Mrs. Hawley was a woman of unusual brilliance and intellectual attainments, whose strong mind and congenial personality will be greatly missed in Ionia society. She is survived by her husband, her father, Geo. H. Lockwood of Rollin, her brother, Geo. H. Lockwood, Jr., and sister, Mrs. Snyder, both of the same place, and another sister, Mrs. Banger of Toledo, Ohio. The funeral will be private, at the residence on Washington street Thursday afternoon. It was the request of Mrs. Hawley that no flowers should be sent after her death, and that her funeral should be a private one. Friends are therefore asked not to send flowers.
