Adelia Tuttle was born in Auburn, New York, Feb. 17th, 1821. But removed in girlhood with her mother’s family to Jackson Co., Michigan, when that county was almost a wilderness. In 1837 she married John Lemmon, by whom she had two daughters, one of whom died in infancy and the other, Mrs. William Brown, is now a resident of Jackson. In 1851 she was married to A. C. Hawley, of Ronald, Ionia Co., Michigan, with whom she lived as a faithful and devoted wife, until her death, and to his children, she proved that rare blessing, a judicious, affectionate and unselfish step-mother, and their loving care and solicitude during her lingering illness showed how fully they recognized her claims upon their love and gratitude. Mrs. Hawley, as a pioneer’s wife, has known many hardships and privations, but an unfaltering energy and tireless patience have upheld her, where many would have succumbed. Never robust in health, yet her skill and judgment have wrought wonders for the comfort and well being of her family, and to the sick about her. She has truly been a ministering angel. During the early settlement of the town, when physicians were hardly to be procured, she was the willing and judicious nurse of all that were ill and suffering, and many a life owes it continuance to her skill and tenderness. “A friend to all who are in trouble,” was a title she won by days of toil and nights of weary watching and ere this she has heard the Savior say: “Come for I was sick and ye visited me.” Mrs. Hawley was a member of no religious denomination. In her early life she was a probationer in the M. E. church. But afterwards changed her religious views, but never lost her firm trust in God, nor her faith in Jesus as a Savior, and in meekness and self sacrifice, she followed Him, as “He went about doing good.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/h/hawley18201nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 2.5 Kb
