M. Hawley, 87, prominent in the Ionia county Republican Women’s committee of which she was vice president for 12 years, died at Ionia County Memorial hospital Monday, Dec. 11, at 9 a.m. She had been a patient there for three weeks and last week underwent surgery. Mrs. Hawley was greatly interested in civic and political affairs. It is through her untiring efforts that the Ionia County Republican committee developed a strong organization of the women of Ionia county. She was well- known throughout the state as one of its leading Republican women. She was born Emma A. Glavin in Harbert, Berrien county, in 1863. On June 18, 1891, she was married to Edward T. Jacobus, and they settled in St. Joseph. In December of that year her husband died and in March, 1892, a son, Harry E. Jacobus, was born. He was drowned in the summer of 1909 while attending a school picnic at Long lake. After the death of her husband she moved to New Buffalo where she lived until 1901 when she married Byron M. Hawley and moved to Ionia where she has lived ever since. Byron Hawley died in 1932. She was a member of the Christian Science church of Ionia. Surviving are two brothers, Thomas H. Glavin of Spokane, Wash., and Frederick E. Glavin of Baltimore, Md. Funeral services were conducted at the Boynton funeral home at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Mrs. C. A. Hood of Mt. Pleasant will read the Christian Science service. Interment will be in the family lot, Oak Hill cemetery.
