Mrs. Hawley, who was with her husband when he swallowed the poison, and who attempted to snatch the bottle from his lips, was badly burned about the hands, face, and arms. The act is believed to have been premeditated for several days. Domestic trouble and ill health are said to have made him despondent. Recently he visited all his relatives living near Belding, and had bid them goodbye, saying he would probably never see them again. The Hawleys, who live on the extreme eastern edge of Belding, were returning from the business section Tuesday evening when the man suddenly pulled a bottle of carbolic acid from his pocket and attempted to swallow it. Mrs. Hawley grappled with him in an effort to gain possession of the bottle and in the struggle she received severe bad burns. Her husband, however, had already swallowed enough of the fluid to cause his death a few hours later.
