Jan. 14, 1980 FORMER BANK HEAD DIED IONIA - A retired president of the First Security Bank of Ionia died Sunday in Ionia County Memorial Hospital. Mr. W.G. (Bill) Hawley, 85, who served as president of the bank until he retired in 1971, died Sunday. "We're all very saddened by it." First Security president Loren Adgate said Monday. "He was very well thought of by the people who worked for him, and was very dedicated to the bank. Mr. Hawley was born in Ionia County's Keene Township on Nov. 30, 1894, the son of the late Gilbert and Hattie Blough Hawley. He attended Saranac High School, and graduated from Ionia High School, later attending Ferris Institute in Big Rapids. Mr. Hawley was employed as an accountant in Ohio, and served in France during World War I. He was senior officer of Ionia County National Bank from 1921-1937, and was self-employed from 1938-1943. He accepted a position with the First Security Bank in 1944, and had attained the position of President upon his retirement in 1971. Mr. Hawley married Lois Burgdoff in 1917 and she preceded him in death in 1945. In 1946 he married Geraldine Scully in Detroit. He was a past president and charter member of the Ionia Lions Club, and was a member of the Ionia Elks Club, the Ferris State College Alumni Association, the Ionia American Legion, the Detroit Economic Club, the Ionia Chamber of Commerce and the Veterans of World War I. Surviving include his wife, Geraldine; one daughter, Katherine Syre of Kingston, Wash.; two granddaughters; and three sisters, Blanche Weber and Bernice Grove, both of Ionia , and Sarah Redemsky of Florida. Private funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m., from the Leddick funeral Home with Mr. Hawley's nephew, the Rev. Michael Danner, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home Monday and Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.. Memorial funds have been established for the Lions Club Sight Conservation program and the Ionia County Memorial Hospital. Additional Comments: Mt.
