Hawley, one of Ionia’s veteran traveling salesmen, died at the home, 267 East Washington street, Friday morning at 4 o’clock, following seven years of ill health, one year of serious illness and 20 weeks spent in bed. The funeral services will be held at the residence Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, with Dr. Williard K. Spencer in charge and the members of the Masonic order giving the Masonic burial rites. The interment will be in the Highland Park cemetery. Mr. Hawley’s death leaves bur one of the family of eight children, a sister living at Rockaway, Ore. He was born near Jackson 84 years ago August 2. He came to this county with his parents in 1859 locating at the time at Palo. The journey at that time and for years afterwards was made to Ionia with the ox team and meant a day’s trip. His education was attained in an old log schoolhouse. In point of years he was at the time of his death the oldest member of the F.&A.M. No. 36. He had lived in Ionia for 40 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church. As a salesman he had covered territory from South Dakota, down the Mississippi river to New Orleans, to the Atlantic coast and to Bangor, Me. Several years he traveled for the Hale Milling company.
