Hawn, 94, of Sheridan, Michigan passed away Thursday, May 3, at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. She was born July 19, 1923, in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Dr. Henry Arthur and Edith Esther (Loveland) Hanson. Virginia married Victor E. Hawn on August 5, 1944, just prior to his induction into the 157th infantry to join the WW II war efforts. He preceded her in death on October 22, 2010. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Debbie Hawn of Waterford, MI; a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Wayne Deatherage of Kankakee, IL; a sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Greg Myers from Sherman, IL. Another sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Gary Heidema of Clifford Lake proceeded her in death. Virginia had two grand-sons, Brad Parker and Brian Parker; one grand-daughter, Tori Deatherage; two step- grandsons, Scott Deatherage and Mike Deatherage; 14 -great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Virginia was a retired teacher from Belding High School. She graduated from Ionia High School, attended Purdue University in Ohio, designed wings for the bombers as an aeronautical engineer for Curtis Wright during the war, received her Bachelor's Degree from Michigan State University and her Masters Degree in English from Central Michigan University. Virginia began teaching at a one room school (Button )School) near Saranac, moved to the Lakes Elementary School between Bostwick and Silver Lake, then to Saranac High School and finally to Belding High School where she headed the English Department. She and her husband helped organize the exchange student program for the Lion's Club in the State of Michigan and therefore hosted several exchange students in their home from Japan, Finland and Sweden. She and her husband loved to travel and made many trips to visit these exchange student families in their home land countries. They not only visited their students, but also traveled throughout Europe, the Holy Land, Egypt and Russia. They were frequent campers and hikers and enjoyed trips to Alaska, Canada, Nova Scotia and Isle Royale. Virginia was an avid swimmer, taught swimming in college, was featured in an article in the Greenville paper about senior health and fitness in her 90s and continued to swim until she passed away. She attended water and chair aerobics and loved taking her little Yorkie for walks. She loved art, history, sewing, needlepoint and read several books a week. Memorials may be made to St.John's Lutheran Church in Ionia with the Rev.Joe Fremer and the Rev. David Bogda officiating. A luncheon will follow immediately in the basement cafeteria.
