The Ionia Standard, Friday, February 8, 1889

Hiram Hay, of Belding, aged 58 years, was killed on Saturday night by his 
horses running away and throwing him out of the wagon.  He had been in town 
during the evening.  When he left the village he took a friend in the wagon 
and drove out to his home north of town.  Upon returning to the village, when 
just across the river his horses ran away, throwing him out of the wagon.  The 
horses went home, but Hay’s body was not found until about 8 o’clock the next 
morning.
