Hayes, 78, died at Grace hospital, Detroit, Thursday at 10 a.m. He was born November 18, 1871, in North Plains township, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mason Bradly Hayes. His early life was spent in North Plains township. He attended Ionia high school and Poucher’s Business college, an institution formerly located in Ionia. On June 28, 1893, he married Miss Jessie Crowell of North Plains. Following the marriage, the couple moved to Chicago where Mr. Hayes engaged in the real estate business. They later moved to Ionia where he was employed for five years at the Michigan state reformatory. The couple moved to Lansing and later to Detroit, where for the past 45 years Mr. Hayes had been in the real estate business. He was a member of the Metropolitan Methodist Episcopal church and also a member of the church board. Mr. Hayes was a past president of the Detroit Real Estate board and a member of the Detroit Yacht club. In 1900 he and his brother, H. Jay Hayes, made a trip in an Eastman stream car, called a “Steam horse carriage,” driving from Northville to Ionia. The trip took five days and received state wide attention. He is survived by his widow, Jessie E. of Detroit; two brothers, H. Jay of Forest Hills, N. Y., and Austin C. of Muir; and one sister, Mrs. Nettie B. Greenhoe of Muir. One brother, George, died in 1941. The body will be at the William R. Hamilton funeral home, Detroit. It will be removed at noon, June 17, to the Metropolitan Methodist church for 1 p.m. services which will be conducted by Dr. Charles Bronson Allen. The funeral party will arrive at the North Plains cemetery between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Interment services will be by Dr. Paul Stewart. Arrangements by the Stone- Kauffman funeral home.
