The Hastings Reminder, August 1998

Mrs. Arlene L. Hazel, age 94, of Traverse City formerly of Lake Odessa, passed 
away on Monday, August 10, 1998 at her daughter’s home in Traverse City.  She 
was born April 5, 1904 in Levering, the daughter of William and Emelia (Funk) 
Schmalzried.  She married Glenn Hazel on August 28, 1928 and he preceded her 
in death on August 27, 1976.

She graduated from Lake Odessa High School in 1921 and from State Teacher’s 
College (Eastern Michigan University) in 1924.  She was active in the Zion 
Lutheran Church of Woodland and the community serving as the librarian of 
Woodland Township Library in the 1960’s.  She enjoyed being with her family, 
especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mrs. Hazel is surviving by her daughters, Janet (Norbert) Winkler of Traverse 
City with who she has made her home for many years, Marjorie (Larry) Wichin of 
Cedar; son, Wayne (Gaye) Hazel of Lake Odessa; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great 
grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 12, 1998 at Zion Lutheran Church, 
Woodland.  Reverend Alan Sellman officiated.  Interment took place at Lakeside 
Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church.  
Funeral arrangements were made by Koops Funeral Chapel, Lake Odessa.
