He had lived on the same block in Lake Odessa almost his entire life. Russell began Hazel Brothers Farm Drainage in 1946 with his brothers. He purchased the first trencher in the area, replacing laying drain tile by hand. Russell retired in 1988 at the age of 70. He was an avid bowler, Tiger and Lions fan, and enjoyed golf and playing cards. Russell served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 and was stationed in Europe for 2 1/2 years. Russell is survived by Jean (Roth), his loving wife of 64 years; children, Thomas (Shawn), and Sally; grandchildren, Amy (James), Rebecca (Lynn), Nikki (Kirk), Toni, Katie, Natalie, Emily, and Chris (Michelle); 8 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters-in- law, Patricia Light, Agnes Harwood, Mildred Hazel, and Peggy Roth; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mildred, Fern, Fran, Pearl, and Ellen; brothers, Clare, Lee, Richard, and Robert; and son-in-law, Patrick O'Rielly. A memorial service was held on Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Koops Funeral Chapel. The family has suggested that memorial contributions may be made to the Jackson-Mutschler VFW Post #4461 in Lake Odessa, or to Boys Town.
