She was 88. Funeral arrangements are pending. Mrs. Dumon served as director of the Mecosta County Historical Museum – formerly the old Phelps Library building – after it was incorporated in 1963. Mrs. Dumon and a score of others worked long days and months getting everything in readiness for its opening. The former Hazel Hopkins met John Dumon, her future husband-to-be in the early 1900’s, when she returned to Ferris Institute to complete college work. He preceded her in death in 1957. Mrs. Dumon was employed in several jobs. She worked for the Wilmarth and Morman Co. in Grand Rapids, and taught at McLaughlin Business College in Grand Rapids. After her marriage and subsequent return to Big Rapids, she worked at Big Rapids Saving Bank and the Four Drive Tractor Co. From that time until 1942 she was employed as deputy register of deeds. She assumed the position of register of deeds for a short while after the death of her boss, Harry Ladner. Mrs. Dumon was active in several organizations. She served as president of the American Legion Auxiliary in 1924-25 and president of the Woman’s Club in 1932-33. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in 1935-36; and a member of the Third Ward Extension Club.
