Hearsey, pioneer resident of this city, was found dead in his bed this noon by his wife, death probably occurring about 11:00 o’clock. He has been failing now for about two years, and it was a year ago that he gave up active work. Lately it has been his custom to rise about noon each day. Mrs. Hearsey looked in a few minutes earlier and saw him sleeping comfortably and breathing; the second time she went in to ask him what he wanted for his noon meal and found him dead. Mr. Hearsey would have been 79 years old if he had lived until July. He was born on his father’s farm, which is now known as the Burton Babcock farm, two miles west of Ionia, and the family moved into the city when he was three years old. His residence has been here continuously ever since, and for the past 35 years he has lived at the present home, 656 West Main street, which was his father’s before he moved there. At the age of fourteen years he began business with his father. They were then in the furniture business having a place in the rear of the Stevenson block. Later, in the late 50’s, they changed gradually into the sash and door business. On May 1, 1861, Mr. Hearsey married Malvina Daniels of Elmira, N.Y., who survives him. They had three children, two of whom are still living – Miss Winnifred Hearsey, who has been summoned from Cadillac, and W. H. Hearsey of this city. The youngest child, Jessie, died at the age of six years. Definite arrangement for the funeral is deferred until the arrival of his daughter.
