HEATH DEAD. Civil War Veteran and Former Ionia Postmaster Passes in Detroit - High in Esteem of Many Citizens. A message from Detroit this morning brought to Mrs. A.L. Tuttle, and her brother, W.B. Heath, the news of the death of their father, Alfred H. Heath, who has been living since last July with another daughter, Mrs. F. S. Smith in Detroit. A message Tuesday announced that he had had a severe stroke of paralysis the night before, and W.R. Heath and A.L. Tuttle went to Detroit on the noon train that day. Another stroke followed before the patient regained consciousness, and he died in the evening. The remains will be brought here tonight with the funeral on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, at the home of his son, W.B. Heath. Burial in the family lot in Highland Park cemetery. Alfred Hale Heath was born November 28, 1838, in New York state. He was only a few years old when his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Zachariah Heath, brought their family to this county, becoming Ionia pioneers. Alfred Heath and a cousin of Edward Everett Hale. Mr. Heath's own career had a good deal of variety in it. When the Civil War broke out in 1861 it found him teaching school in Indiana. He was there only a short time but that brief residence caused his enlistment to be made in the 99th Indiana infantry, with which he served to the end of war, receiving several promotions. Previous to his military experience he had taught school for some years, and had served as school commissioner when only 17 years old. At the time of his enlistment he was married and he left one child, a year old behind him when he went to war. His wife was formerly Miss Cynthia Gardner of Keene township, and they were married in 1858. After the war, Mr. Heath bought a farm near Saranac, where he lived until 1870, when he was elected register of deeds and moved to this city. After his term as register expired he became postmaster. He lived here until about 1884, and after that moved to Detroit, where he was interested in manufacturing business through the 80's and 90's. Later he and his wife lived in various places - for almost two years at Sault Ste. Marie, in British Columbia and in Texas, with their daughter, Mrs. Tuttle, and in this city. They were in Pittsburg, Pa., at the time of the death of Mrs. Heath in September, 1914. Mr. Heath afterward lived in this city. On July 4 of last year he went to Detroit to Mrs. Smith's home, and there died. He had had a slight stroke of paralysis a year ago, but had recovered sufficiently to be able to walk without the assistance of a cane, and seemed in his customary health until Monday. He leaves four children - Mrs. Tuttle of this city, Mrs. Smith of Detroit, W.B. Heath here and A. L. Heath of Pueblo, Col. There are six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
