Hecox, Civil War Veteran Buried Wednesday Well Known Ionian Yields To Death After Major Operation Here Sterling patriot and splendid citizen, faithful churchman and true fraternal brother, Francis Marion Hecox on Wednesday was borne to his final resting place in beautiful Oak Hill cemetery, leaving to mourn their loss scores, yes hundreds of friends and relatives. Mr. Hecox was taken to Community hospital last week for an operation which, it was hoped, would overcome an ailment he suffered. The operation was performed Friday and his condition remained critical until Monday when death called. Highly Esteemed The high esteem in which he was held was testified by the presence in the home at 622 Union street, Wednesday afternoon, of many of his friends and fraternal brothers, and floral tributes that decked his bier. The splendid record of his life was basis enough for the words of consolation offered by Rev. W.F. Kendrick. Mr. Hecox was born in Vergennes, July 27, 1845. He had been a resident of this city for 36 years. He was a faithful and loyal member of the Methodist Episcopal church, had proud affiliation in the Eastern Star and for over a half-century had worn the compass and square of a Masonic order. He was a Civil War veteran and had been a member of the G.A.R. Greatly Beloved His great friendship was all embracing and brought him a bountiful return of love and affection from all who knew him. Many honors had been bestowed upon him through life by the fraternities and church and over his grave might well be written that beautiful epitaph: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” He is survived by his wife, Leolin G. Hecox, his son, G.L. Hecox, Chicago; two brothers, C.L. Hecox, Greenville and Clyde W. Hecox, St. Ignace, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
