Maxine Irene Heffelbower, 89, went to be with the Lord March 16, 2010.  She was
born June 8, 1920, and Ionia, the daughter of Lee and Irene (Stout) Phelps.  She
retired from the Dept. of the Friend of the Court in Ionia County.  Maxine was a
member of First Presbyterian Church, and the Sheridan V.F.W.  She enjoyed her
time crocheting many items, in which she had won many awards and were displayed
yearly at the Ionia Free Fair.  Maxine also enjoyed reading, bingo and needlework.

She is survived by her daughter Sandy (Alan) Thelen of Fowler; sons, Keith
(Valerie) Melvin II of Lansing, and Bruce (Joy) Melvin of Mary Ester, Fla.;
stepchildren Robert (Sharon) Heffelbower of Florida, Alan (Robin) Heffelbower,
and Roger (Nancy) Heffelbower of Barryton; 16 grandchildren; 24
great-grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; brother LaVern (Marilyn)
Phelps of Grand Rapids; sisters-in-law Naomi Phelps, Ethel Durbin and Dorothy
Melvin.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Melvin in 1973, and her
second husband, Elvin Heffelbower, in 2002; also her son, Dennis Melvin and
daughter-in-law Sondra Melvin in 1979; brothers Lawrence Walter and Frank
Phelps; grandson Rusty Robidux, and great-granddaughter Samantha Wohlfert.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, at First Presbyterian Church, 125
E. Main St. in Ionia, with Rev. Karen Nuddels officiating.  Interment Oakwood
Cemetery of Muir.  The family will receive friends and relatives from 4 to 7
p.m. Thursday at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.
