Heitman, 51, Ionia businessman, city councilman and secretary of the Ionia Rotary club, died suddenly at 1:30 a.m. Friday at his home at 503 Rich street of a heart attack. He became ill during the night after having played golf at the Ionia Country club Thursday afternoon. He had been afflicted with a heart condition for a number of years. A week ago Thursday afternoon he said he had been forced to take medication on the golf (illegible words) he became slightly ill while playing. He said it was the first time in several years he had been affected by his heart illness. His doctor had called earlier in the evening Thursday. Owner of Heitman's Jewelry store, Heitman was a long-time resident of Ionia. He had attended the Lutheran school in the grades and was graduated from Ionia high school in 1927. He attended Ferris institute from which he was graduated in 1931 and had worked from 1933 in watch repairing and Jewelry business with the late Charles VanReenen. He purchased the business in 1951 following VanReenen's death. Born in Greenville, October 6, 1909, the son of Frank and Anna Heitman, he came to Ionia at the age of five. In June 1933 he was married to Irma Lefler of Boyne City who was teaching school in Ionia at the time. He was an ardent worker in his church, the St. Johns Lutheran and served in numerous capacities including its board chairman. He has been a member of the Ionia Rotary and had served as club secretary for many years. As a member of the Ionia Country Club he had served on its board of directors and was a director of the Michigan Retail jewelers association. He began his career in politics in Ionia's third ward being elected to the city council eight years ago as alderman on the Republican ticket. He was reelected earlier this month for another two year term and a fifth term. Surviving are his wife, Irma, two children, Mrs. James O. Hood of Ionia, and son, 1st Lt. Fred Heitman of March Air Force Base, Riverside, Calif.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday from St. Johns Lutheran church on North Jefferson street. Interment will be at Balcom cemetery South of Ionia. The Boynton Funeral home is making arrangements. A memorial for the St. Johns Lutheran church building fund and the Lutheran Children's Friend Society has been established.
