Helmer, 73, of Easton township, died Wednesday, March 12, at the Ionia County Memorial Hospital. Frederick George Helmer was born June 11, 1923 in Barryton, Mich., the son of Glen and Mina (Good) Helmer. He grew up in Easton Township and attended Easton School. He was married Feb. 15, 1976 in Ionia to Stella Schlabach. Fred served in the U.S. Army Airborne as a Corporal during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart. He lived for 35 years in the Thumb area as a truck driver before retiring. Frederick was a member of the Harbor Beach V.F.W. Post #9344. He loved fishing and outdoor activities. He is survived by his wife, Stella; three daughters, Lauri (Jim) Quandt of Sandusky, Mich., Leanne (Phillip) Armstead of Kimball, Mich. and Shelly (Bradley) Nowak of Waterford, Mich.; two sons, Frederick Helmer of Port Huron and David Helmer of Marquette; 15 grandchildren; two sisters, Lorraine (Ross) Cox of Ionia and Beverly (Earl) Peterson of Belding; four brothers, Wayne (Nancy) Helmer of Stanton, Thayne (Mary) Helmer of Ionia, Maynard (Barbara) Helmer of Ionia and Donald (Deanne) Helmer of Ionia; two sister-in-law, Frances Helmer of Ionia and Joy Helmer of Orleans; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Linda; one grandchild; and two brothers L.A."Bud" and Larry. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday,March15, 1997 at 11 a.m. from the Shiloh Community Church with Pastor Robert Jourdan of the North Plains community Church officiating. Military Graveside services will be conducted Saturday at 1:30 p.m. by the Lester J. Sitts Sheridan V.F.W. Post 35065 at Easton cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 pm to 8:30 pm at the Cook Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
