Thayne Gordon Helmer, age 73, of Ionia, passed away Nov. 11, 2007 in Ionia.  
He was born Feb. 27, 1934 in Ionia Twp. the son of Glen L. and Mina (Good) 
Helmer. Thayne married Mary Lafler July 22, 1989. He was a Navy veteran, and 
he worked as a corrections officer at Riverside Correctional Facility until 
retiring in 1991. He was a member of the Ionia Moose Lodge and a past member 
of Belding VFW.

Thayne is survived by his loving wife of 18 years Mary Helmer of Ionia; 
daughters, Brenda (Sam) Simpson of Ionia, Julie (Phil) Waldron of Orleans and 
Valerie Baas and Jim Roberts of Grand Rapids; stepchildren, Denise (Dave) 
Rogers of Ionia, Wayne (Barb) Lafler of Saranac, Greg (Anna) Lafler of Ionia; 
brothers, Wayne (Nancy) Helmer of Saranac, Maynard (Barb) Helmer of Ionia and 
Don (Dee) Helmer of Ionia; sister, Beverly (Earl) Peterson of Belding; 
grandchildren, Ashly Simpson, Mark Simpson, Amber Waldron, Bradley Baas and 
Colin Baas; 13 step-grandchildren and 21 stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepdaughter Brenda Hewartson and 
brothers; George, Larry and Bud and sister Lorraine Cox.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Shiloh 
Community Church with Rev. Kenneth Harger officiating. Interment Easton 
Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives Wednesday 2 to 4 and 6 
to 8 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. In lieu of flowers you may make 
memorial contributions to American Cancer Society or Shiloh Community Church.
