He was born the son of William and Rosa Mae (Bennett) Helmes on Jan. 13, 1931 in Ionia. Melvin served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He worked at Gen Corp in Ionia for 41 years as a millwright, retiring in 1991. He was a parachute rigger for the Sky Hawk Sky Divers in Ionia. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Lelia (Frances); one son, Terry A. Helmes of Vickeryville; two daughters, Deborah (Fred) Shaeffer of Orleans and Beverly Lynn Bissell of Mesquite, Nev.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold (Dorothy) Helmes of Harrison; two sisters, Betty Heyn of Belding and Margie Smith of Portland. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Graveside serves will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday at the Easton Cemetery with Roger Moor officiating.
