Helmes, 88, from Harrison and formerly from Ionia, passed away Oct. 11, 2015, at Masonic Pathways in Alma, Michigan. He was born Feb. 8, 1927, to William and Rosa Mae B. Helmes in Ionia. Harold married Lillion Snyder on March 7, 1947. He was an Army World War II veteran. He worked at TRW in Portland for 30 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 404 of Harrison, a volunteer at the Harrison County Sheriff’s department and a member of the Masons (Corning Lodge #335) of Farwell, Michigan. He loved Northern Michigan, his favorite spot was Hog Island. He also had a passion for animals and camping. Harold is survived by two sons, Barry (Judy) Helmes of Ionia and Larry (Christine) Helmes of Charlotte; six grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one sister, Marjorie Smith of Portland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian Helmes July 30, 1992; sisters, Phyllis Coston, Betty Heyn, and Mary Esther Daddazio; and brothers Melvin and Perry Helmes. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Lake funeral Home in Ionia. Visitation will be Tuesday 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
