Hemingway, 88, for 44 years a resident of Ionia, and the oldest member of the Ionia Elks, died about noon Wednesday after weeks of illness. Mr. Hemingway was born June 29, 1857, in Oakland county. He attended business college after graduation from Pontiac high school. For 20 years he was a resident of Sheridan, where he operated a private bank, moving to Ionia in 1901 as assistant cashier of the Ionia State Savings bank. He was married at St. Louis, Mo., in 1881 to Kittie Jennings of Ionia. Mrs. Hemingway died in Ionia in 1938. Mr. Hemingway remained at the Ionia bank until 1921, when he became agent for a mortgage bond organization. He retired from active business in 1931. While in Pontiac he joined the Baptist church, but upon moving to Ionia became affiliated with the Presbyterian church. He was a past exalted ruler of the Ionia Elks and a life member of the Sheridan Masonic order, and a former Ionia Country club member. An ardent sportsman, he was fond of all athletics, following local high school sports closely. He was fond of hunting, and had been an expert trap shooter and hunter, and had owned a number of hunting dogs of state-wide reputation. Surviving are three children, Elizabeth of Ionia, Roberta of Chicago, and a son, Edson, now believed en route from Tokyo with the merchant marine. A granddaughter, Kittie Hemingway, daughter of Edson, lives at Eureka, Calif. Funeral services will be conducted from the Boynton funeral home on Rich street Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev. Adam Westmaas, pastor of the Ionia Presbyterian church, will officiate. Burial will be at the Sheridan cemetery.
