Maxine L. Wittenbach Ravell Hempel, 81, of Belding died Tuesday, July 30, 1996
at United Memorial Hospital in Greenville.  She was born May 6, 1915 in Belding,
the daughter of Raymond and Vinnie (Hoppough) Weeks.  She attended Aquinas
College and graduated from Western Michigan University.  She taught school at
Mason, Ashley and Lakes elementary schools for over 30 years.  She was a member
of St. Patricks Catholic Church, Parnell and was a member of the Altar Society
and the Michigan Education Association.  She married Leo F. Wittenbach Aug. 4,
1936 at St. Patricks Church and he preceded her in death April 14, 1967.  She
was also preceded in death by her second husband, Watkin A. Ravell and her third
husband, Roy Hempel.

She is survived by her children: Sister Alice Wittenbach of Grand Rapids,
Patricia (Jerry) Potter of Grand Rapids, John (Joy) Wittenbach and Timothy
Wittenbach of Belding, and James (JoAnn) Wittenbach of Granger, Ind.; six
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one
sister, Marion Silcox and one brother, Harold Weeks.

Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Patricks Catholic Church, Parnell
with Father Wayne Wheeler officiating.  Interment will be in Ashley Cemetery. 
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at
the Johnson Funeral Home in Belding and one hour prior to the service Friday. 
There will be a vigil service at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  Memorial
contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the
Dominican Sisters Retirement Fund.
