O. Hendee, Ill But Few Days, Is Dead Substantial Portland Citizen Is A Victim Of Inflammatory Rheumatism. Industrious, Frugal, He Had Nice Fortune. Was a Member and Faithful Worker in Baptist Church; Bride of Three Weeks Survives Him. Judson O. Hendee, one of the best known and most substantial citizens of Portland, passed away Saturday evening at his home in this village, from inflammatory rheumatism, and other complications, from which he had been ill since Thanksgiving day. His death was a great shock and a depressing blow to everyone who knew him. Funeral services were held at the late home, corner of Brush and Lincoln streets, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. John H. Stewart, of Sparta, a personal friends of the deceased, assisted by Rev. Truman F. Galt, of Portland, officiating. Burial took place in the Portland cemetery. Mr. Hendee was nearly 73 years of age at the time of his death, having been born in Jackson county, Michigan, January 25, 1847. When he was a few years old his parents moved to Shiawassee county, and in the winter of 1865 he came with his brother, Oscar, to what is now Collins. Since that time he had spent his whole life in Portland and vicinity, where he had built up a big acquaintance and drawn to his side a large number of friends. By hard work and frugality he acquired a fine farm near Portland, has a beautiful home in town and considerable other property. For a few years he worked for R. D. Bullock, of Jackson, selling organs. Then he went into the monument business in Portland, having been associated for some time with the late L. C. Wood, of this village. Later on, on account of failing health, he sold out his business and since then has passed his time looking after his property. In 1885 Mr. Hendee was married to Miss Annie Phillips, of Portland, who died August 12, 1916, and just three weeks before his death he was united in marriage at Sparta, Mich., to Miss Jessie C. White, a daughter of the late William H. White, by the same clergyman who officiated at his funeral Tuesday. Mr. Hendee had his eccentricities, but he was of a very jovial disposition and had many friends. When nine years of age he became a Christian by uniting with the Baptist church in Vernon, Mich. Later on, when he came to Portland, he transferred his membership to the Portland church. He has been a faithful member of the society and has held various offices, such as trustee, choir leader, superintendent and teacher in the Sunday school. He leaves, to mourn his loss, his newly wedded wife, who has the deepest sympathy of her many Portland friends, one brother, Ira Hendee, of Flint, one sister, Mrs. Ida Lindsley, of Owosso, a large number of nieces and nephews and a host of warm friends.
