James Henderson, one of the oldest residents of the township, died at his home in East Odessa on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 1904, after an illness that had its beginning just a little over a year ago, when he was stricken with a bad case of rheumatism, and since has been unable to walk, but has been around the home on a chair. A week ago he was taken worse, old age seeming to be his principle ailment, and the end hastened with all speed. Mr. Henderson was born in Jedbury, Scotland, Sept. 25, 1822. He lived there with his parents for a number of years, until both had passed away, and in May 29, 1850, was married in that country to Miss Jeannette Hood. They remained in the fatherland until 1857, when with his little family of wife and three children they set sail for America. After landing here they proceeded at once for Ionia county, where Mr. H. had a brother and three sisters who had come to this country a number of years before. Here he went to farming, and first worked on a farm in Keene for three years, and then went to work for Sanford Yeomans, father of Senator Walter Yeomans. He worked there for three years, and then came to Odessa township and bought 40 acres on which his home now stands. Most of this 40 was wilderness at that time, although the little place contained all of the necessary building for a life at that time. Here he has lived and labored ever since, gradually paying for his little home, and adding to it as fast as possible until at the time of his death he leaves a fair-sized property, and a prosperous family of boys and girls. Mrs. Henderson died 25 years ago, and since her death the home has been kept by a daughter, who has lovingly looked after the place as the mother had done, and has cared for the father in his declining years, being assisted by the brothers and sisters, all living near and ever alert to the father’s welfare and needs. To Mr. and Mrs. Henderson were born six children, two boys and four daughters, all of whom are alive and well, and lived near the aged parent. They are: John and Archie Henderson, and Mrs. Christopher Hiller, of Odessa; Mrs. L.H. Holcomb, and Mrs. Sylvester Daniels, of Sebewa, and Miss Mary Henderson, who has been keeping house for the father. Mr. Henderson has lived a clean and conscientious life, he has been a good neighbor, and prominent in the affairs of his township and community. For some time he has been past the possibilities of being active in the affairs of his home and community, however he has left record that the family may boast of with much pride and satisfaction. Mr. Henderson early joined the Presbyterian church, and when he came to Michigan was active in the work of his church but in later years the church north of his home has been without a pastor, and he has not attended at any place as his age was a barrier to his going far away from home. However, he has tried to live a clean Christian life, and he died strong in the faith of his maker. Besides the family of six children he leaves a brother, Archie Henderson, who has been a resident of Keene township for a number of years, but for the past year has been at the home of his stricken brother, tenderly caring for him and helping to look to his every want and need. The funeral was held from the Carr church in northeast Odessa, this forenoon at ten o’clock, and the remains laid at rest in Lakeside cemetery. Rev. Alverson officiated.
