HELEN HEPLER DIED IN BATTLE CREEK The mysterious circumstances in th death of Mrs. Helen D. Hepler 47, divorced wife of Fred Hepler of Battle Creek are being investigated by Battle Creek police officers. They were called into the case by Coroner Ralph Callahan, who said an autopsy performed showed she may have died from poisoning. Helen formerly lived here and had been a resident of Battle Creek about 25 years. She is the daughter of the late William and Sylvia Poff and was formerly married to Ira Fischer. Their son Billy was killed in a car accident near Grand Rapids about six years ago, a few days after his release from service. The coroner said he would not try to determine the cause of death and his decision to call an inquest would be held up until the state laboratory makes their report. Helen was found by a tenant of the apartment house when a woman friend from Marshall failed to receive a response to her knocks on the door and asked him to investigate. She was found in a sitting position on the davenport in her living room. Her right arm was on the arm of the davenport and her face rested in the crook of her arm. Surviving are two daughters Mrs. E. E. (Jackie) Sweeney Jr. and Mrs. Richard (Marilyn) Cross, both of Battle Creek; two sisters, Mrs. Gerald (Hazel) Middling of Battle Creek and Mrs William (Rosetta) Beck of DeWitt and three grand children. She was a sister of the late Howard D. Poff. Funeral services were held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Hebble funeral home, Battle Creek, with burial in Lakeside cemetery. Mrs. Clayton Burleigh and daughters Margaret Poff of Clarksville, Mrs. Thomas Courtney and Mr. and Mrs. Lafe William Jr. of Grand Rapids attended the funeral services.
