Herald, 92, of Ionia, passed away on January 8, 2004 at his home. He was born the son of Edward and Georgia (Gillio) Herald on September 16, 1911 in Hubbardston. He graduated from St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Hubbardston and was a veteran of World War II in the United States Army, receiving the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Mr. Herald was a self-employed contractor in Ionia for 60 years. He was a member of the Hubbardston American Legion Post #182 for 60 years, a member of the Sheridan VFW Post #5065, the Ionia Moose Lodge #998, SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus #944. He was an avid baseball and football fan and was a member of “The Greatest Generation.” He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Herald on March 5, 1996; two brothers, Buss and Ed; two sisters, Jewel and Martha. Surviving are his five daughters, Sandra (Eric) Peasley of Lansing, Judith Herald of Ionia, Mary K. (Mark) Hanna of Sunfield, Nancy (Dan) Thelen of Ionia, and Janet (Roy) Wellman of Sheridan; 12 grandchildren, Sonya, Jason, Samantha, Nicki, Renee, Robert Stacy, Kristi, Hayes, Michael, Roy Andrew and Roy Elgin; 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Rose, Donna, Betty and Billie; several nieces and nephews. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. Melvin Fox, Pastor, at 1 p.m. Monday at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ionia. Military Honors will be provided by the Sheridan VFW Post #5065. Interment will take place in the spring at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Ionia. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia Area Hospice or to the “Moose Heart” in memory of Mr. James B. Herald.
