He was born on June 30, 1931, to Fred and Marie (Jorae) Herblet of Laingsberg. After attending Resurrection High School, John went to G.M.I. and served in the United States Army. He worked for Fisher Body for 32 years before retiring, but he continued working the rest of his life as a small business owner, a rural mail carrier and an apartment complex manager. John loved many outdoor activities, especially gardening, golf, pitching horseshoes, and sitting around a bonfire with family and friends. John was a member of the Grand Ledge American Legion Post #48, the Lansing Eagles Lodge, and the Grand River Conservation Club of Portland. John was preceded in death by his first wife, Marian (Myers); and sister Teresa Rose. He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Kaboni) of Eagle; son Jon (Keri) of Portland; daughters Ann (Jeff) Van Allen of Ionia, Mary of Portland, Patti of Lansing, and Jean (Jeff) Bugbee of Lake Odessa; step sons, Richard (Kari) Ferrell of Lansing, and Christopher (Sally) Farrell of Wiky, Ontario, Canada; step daughter, Kim (Joseph) Haigh of Lansing; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Richard (Connie) Herblet of Grand Rapids; sisters, Ann (Johnnie) Hoffman of Bakersfield, Ca., and Judith of Lansing; numerous sisters-and brothers-in-law. The funeral liturgy will be conducted by Deacon Tony Pelak of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. Interment will follow at Danby Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, or to the Hospice of your choice, in memory of John Nicholas Herblet.
