Last Rites for J. P. Hershiser After a life of service to mankind Rev. J. P. Hershiser passed away at his home here Thursday. He came to Lake Odessa in 1898 and for twelve years was a pastor for the United Brethren denomination. He was a most conscientious man always preaching and teaching the things he believed to be right, and ever striving to do the will of his Master whom he trusted. His three sons were graduates of our high school. Byron, the second boy, died by drowning at Bay City in 1908. The funeral was held at the home Saturday afternoon. The minister and singers were from Lansing. Burial was at Lakeside cemetery. Obituary John Peter Hershiser was born in Christian parents in Richland county, Ohio, November 21, 1849. At about 22 years of age he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Hall of Pioneer, O. To this union was born a daughter Etta. After about ten years of married life his wife died, after which he sold his farm and tool up a theological course at Fayette, O. here he met Miss Martha Johnson of Mountsburg, Ont., whom he married June 25, 1885. To this union was born three sons, Russel, Byron and Cecil. Byron preceding his father August 8, 1908. At an early age he gave himself to God and spent thirty years of his life in His active ministry. He came to Lake Odessa in 1898 and although he has owned property in and around Lake Odessa since his arrival here, he has spent about eighteen years of this time elsewhere in the service of his Master. He died at the age of 80 years, 5 months and 24 days and leaves to mourn his departure his wife Martha, the daughter, Mrs. Etta Freeman of Bay City, the two sons, Russell of Lansing and Cecil of Detroit, a brother David A. Hershiser of Pioneer, O., eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild, besides a host of friends.
