November 25, 2023 Byron Hesterly Hesterly, age 97, of Hasting's, MI passed away on Monday, Mov. 20, 2023, at Thornapple Manor in Hastings. Byron was born in Woodland,MI on June 126, 1926, a son of the late Hildred and Charles Hesterly. He was raised on the family farm in Woodland, attending country school as a young boy, later graduating from Woodland High School in 1944. After completing his education, Byron continued to work on the family dairy farm, eventually transitioning the operation away from dairy to focus on crop and cattle production. Bryon was a lifelong farmer, however, after a major barn fire he decided to shift away from "full Time' farming and began employment at Viking Corp. in Hastings, MI. Over the years Byron had worked in several local manufacturing companies, as well as driving school bus for Lakewood School for over 19 years. After leaving his bus route, Byron joined Walmart as a door greeter which allowed him to keep busy while continuing to interact with his many friends in the community. On September 5, 1948, Byron was married to Betty (Martin) Hesterly at her parents' home in Hastings, MI with the reception being hosted by Byron's family at their Woodland area farm.Byron and Betty spent their lives together in Woodland raising their two children together. As time permitted, the couple enjoyed an evening at the movies and going out to dinner during the summer months, they enjoyed "getting away" to Neebish Island in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, which occasionally included extended family. During his spare time, Byron enjoyed bowling and throughout the years has bowled several perfect "300" games. Most recently, he enjoyed keeping himself busy with jigsaw puzzles and word searches. Byron was a man of very strong faith and was an active member of the united Brethren Church in Woodbury later joining Hope United Methodist church in Hastings where he and Betty have attended for the past 16 years. Byron and Betty have celebrated over 75 years of marriage and were honored as the Grand Marshals of the 2018 Woodland Homecoming. Byron is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; his two children Mark (Julie) Hesterly, Jeff (Pam) Hesterly; his brother, Ron (Mary) Hesterly; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Virginia Tousley, Doris Blair, Verdon Hesterly, Herbert Hesterly. Funeral service were held Friday, Nov. 24, 2023, at Hope United Methodist Church, 2920 M-37 Highways, Hastings, MI, with Pastor Tod Clark officiating. Interment took place following the funeral luncheon at Fuller Cemetery in Hastings, MI.
