Mr. Heth’s disease was the fell destroyer, consumption. For months he lingered, receiving the ministrations of a devoted wife, kind parents and friends, each day leaving but its number less, the fatal disease insidiously, but surely, bringing the end. “In the morning of life, beloved by all, he has passed away. How truly in the midst of life we are in death.” The funeral services were held August 11 in the U.B. church at Shanty Plains, conducted by Rev. T. B. Millar. The text was a part of the 29th verse of the 10th chapter of Numbers. We are journeying to the place, a fitting type, said the speaker, of life’s journey. All are journeying to a common place, the grave. “It is appointed unto man once to die.” God had a purpose in putting us here, and that purpose was that the world may be the better for our having lived in it, and also that we should glorify God in our bodies and spirits, which are his. God has given each of us an undying principle, and has entrusted to us the care of that principle. Christianity has bridged over the river of death and points to a place of eternal rest beyond the grave, and our conduct here must prepare us for that place, for “after death the judgment” is the solemn declaration of God’s word. God has not arbitrarily determined the length of human life, much depends on ourselves, our conduct may prolong or shorten life. The good man has the promise of heaven with all its glory, and the great, the most earnest work of life with each of us should be to be prepared for death and for the life beyond the grave.
