Aug. 10, 1917 William Hewitt was born in Gerard, Erie County, Pennsylvania, January 15, 1840, and died at his home 1721 Jefferson Ave., Grand Rapids, July 30, 1917, aged 77 years, six months and 15 days. When only a boy he moved with his parents to Parkman, Ohio, and at the beginning of the Civil war, enlisted with the Ohio troops and served four years as an artilleryman. In 1867 he drove a team from Ohio into the wilds of Michigan and located at Campbell, Ionia County, where he conducted a general store for 27 years. At the same place he was postmaster for 25 years. February 25, 1868, he was married to Mary E. Whitney and to this union were born five children, three of whom are still living. Mrs.Edward Snobble of Lake Odessa, W.S. Hewitt of Afton, Ia., and Mrs. Thomas Brower of Grand Rapids. About 25 years ago the family moved to Grand Rapids where they have since resided. Mr. Hewitt was a life member of the Masonic order. Besides the three children he leaves three brothers and two sisters in Ohio to mourn his loss. Mrs. Hewitt having passed away at Lake Helen, Florida, January 26,1917.
